Marseille Riot Causes Match Postponement

A riot by Olympique de Marseille ultras has caused the match with Stade Rennais to be postponed. Around 300 fans attacked the Marseille training ground on Saturday. Video footage showed fans throwing flares and smoke bombs, setting a tree on fire as they attempted to storm the Jean-Louis Dreyfus Centre training ground. Earlier on Saturday Saint-Etienne's training session was interrupted by protesting fans after they had lost 5-0 to Lyon in their previous game. The Marseille riot started as a protest march against the directors, before they bombarded the buildings at the training centre with flares, resulting in a tree catching fire. An official statement from Marseille read: "Olympique de Marseille strongly condemns the unacceptable attack on the club this afternoon inside the Robert-Louis Dreyfus training centre. A few hundred individuals from Ultras supporters groups broke into the site of the Commanderie's training centre, including the professional group's building, by force, and with violence. Despite the intervention of the police, an unjustifiable outbreak of violence endangered the lives of those present on the site (players, staff, law enforcement, security guards, employees). Thefts were perpetrated and vehicles were damaged. Five trees were burnt with the sole intention of destruction. Damage inside the buildings amounted to several hundred thousand euros." Police arrested 25 as they attempted to deal with the protest.
