Review of the Day
Contracts
Transfers
West Ham United manager David Moyes has revealed that last-season's loan revelation Jesse Lingard was never close to a return to the Hammers. Moyes said: "Ole made it quite clear to me early in the transfer window that he wanted to keep him. So I knew pretty early that he would be staying at Manchester United. I was hearing all the stuff but I had a private conversation with Ole who made it clear he was staying."
Sao Paulo have terminated former Barcelona right-back Dani Alves' contract after the 38-year-old went on strike over an alleged failure to pay part of his salary.
Free agent Ivorian forward Cedric Gondo has signed for Serie A's Salernitana.
Former Everton midfielder Muhamed Besic has found a new club. The 29-year-old was a free agent but has now signed for Hungarian club Ferencvaros.
Injury Round-Up
Veteran former Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest defender James Perch has fractured his skull in training. The 35-year-old, who now plays for Mansfield Town, will miss the rest of the season after an "innocuous aerial challenge" in training.
Another veteran who will be missing for a lengthy period is Bristol Rovers striker Leon Clarke. The forward is believed to have suffered a long term injury. Midfielder Sam Nicholson is also out for a month for Rovers due to a shin injury.
Peterborough United will be without duo Jack Marriott and Joel Randall for a significant period. Marriott ruptured his hamstring on Tuesday, while Randall has been ruled out for at least 2 months with a thigh problem.
Managerial Changes
After the general secretary of Manchester City's official supporters club told Pep Guardiola to "stick to coaching" over Guardiola's comments asking for more fans to attend games, Guardiolan has now offered to step aside. Guardiola said: "I am entirely grateful for the support that we had against Leipzig. I always say if guys want to come we will be incredibly grateful because I know how difficult the game will be and I know we need our people. I never sit here and ask why people don't come. If you can't come then don't. If it's a problem for fans, I will step aside. From day one, I do my best. I like to play at the Etihad with my fans... my intentions are to be part of something, to do it together."
Disciplinary Charges
A game in the Concacaf Champions League between Cruz Azul and Monterrey, both Mexican clubs, was suspended for a period and the players sent back to the changing room due to homophobic chanting from some of the Cruz Azul fans. The game was stopped for 10 minutes before resuming without the chants.
The federal prosecutors' office in Italy has opened an investigation into Lazio fans after they were alleged to have made racist chants against AC Milan's on-loan Chelsea midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko. Bakayoko also believes that the Lazio fans made racist chants against his midfield partner Franck Kessie.
Super-cheaters Derby County are set to finally receive some punishment for their continued and flagrant abuse of EFL FFP rules, as the Championship club is set to go into administration. The Rams will be facing a 12-points deduction on entering admin. A Derby statement read: "We cannot stress enough how devastating it is to be forced into this position. This season, Covid-19 has continued to have a negative effect on revenues. Unlike other sectors, football has been able to only marginally reduce its cost base with the majority of outgoings being associated with playing staff who obviously could not be furloughed." The blame can only be placed on the board, who have consistently spend beyond the club's means on expensive, highly paid players and current manager Wayne Rooney.
Rochdale In The Dark
After a group of investors pulled out of an attempt to buy Rochdale due to an investigation by the English Football League, Dale have revealed that they had no contact with the group. Morton House MGT have been alleged to have taken over the club without EFL consent but a Rochdale statement read: "The club have had no contact whatsoever with Morton House MGT and First Form Construction Ltd, or Matt Southall. The EFL have also had no contact with either party. As always, the club will continue to comply with all EFL regulations on ownership and acquisition of control, and, as per the EFL statement of August 21, 2021, we will assist the EFL in any way possible with their ongoing investigation into Morton House MGT and First Form Construction Ltd."
Becks Buys Out Inter Miami Partners
David Beckham and Jorge and Jose Mas have bought out Inter Miami co-owners Marcelo Claure and Masayoshi Son. The Major League Soccer side has also been boosted by an investment of $150m by Ares Management.
