Review of the Day
Contracts
Venezia's young Icelandic winger Bjarki Steinn Bjarkason has signed a new deal running until 2024 with an option for a further year.
Lautaro Martinez has extended his Inter Milan contract until 2026.
Experienced central defender Simon Kjaer has signed an extension with AC Milan which expires in 2024.
Teenage Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil has signed a 4 year contract.
Transfers
Injury Round-Up
Charlton Athletic will be without defender Sam Lavelle for the "long-term" due to a groin injury that required surgery.
There is light at the end of the tunnel for Exeter City defender Sam Stubbs, who has been out with a knee injury since December. The 22-year-old centre-back is due to begin training with the team.
Inter Milan midfielder Christian Eriksen has been ruled out for the rest of the season in Serie A due to having an ICD (implantable cardioverter defribrillator - a type of pacemaker) installed. The 29-year-old collapsed while playing for Denmark in Euro 2020 during the summer and required life-saving treatment on the pitch. An Inter statement explained: "The player has been temporarily inhibited by the Italian medical authority from sporting activity in the current season. Although the current conditions of the player don't meet the requirements of achieving sporting fitness in Italy, the same could instead be achieved in other countries where the player could resume competitive activity." Ajax's Netherlands international and former Manchester United defender Daley Blind has an ICD fitted and has been able to continue to play competitively for both Ajax and Holland, so it is possible that the former Tottenham Hotspur man could move elsewhere and continue his career.
Managerial Changes
Didier Six has been replaced as manager of the Guinea national team by Kaba Diawara and Mandjou Diallo.
Barcelona B's head coach Sergi Barjuan has been given temporary charge of the first team following the sacking of Ronald Koeman. Club president Joan Laporta has admitted that he has been in contact with Al Sadd's former Barca midfielder Xavi.
Disciplinary Charges
Union Berlin have been ordered to close part of their stadium for the next UEFA competition match they take part in due to racist behaviour by their fans during the match against Maccabi Haifa in the Europa Conference League.
Crawley Town's kit manager Marcus Doyle has been handed a 2-match stadium ban by the Football Association for violent conduct and a fine of £900.
Nuno Questions Commitment Of Players
After being questioned on his decision to omit both Dele Alli and Harry Winks from his squad in the League Cup midweek, Nuno Espirito Santo has suggested they lack commitment: "At the end of the day what we want is for all players to be involved and committed. This word is very important. The commitment is very important. When you are committed, you understand better some kind of decisions. You are more patient and keep doing what you should do. Focus on your task, day after day. I wish all the players were equally committed. That would be absurd to tell that is the reality, because the players have their own expectations. These players have to go beyond. They have to make a conscious effort that he has to go again from the beginning of the week to change the opinion and the idea of the manager. This is how it works. In this industry, this is what the player should do. Unfortunately, it's not what is always happening."
The Beginning Of The End
It seems like we have finally seen the end of FIFA's plan to hold a World Cup every two years, instead of four, as the Football Association of Wales have come out to voice their opposition to the idea. I doubt FIFA could hope to continue the plan now they know the Welsh are against it....
