Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has been targeted by the New York Red Bulls who are looking to replace designated players Thierry Henry and Tim Cahill.

Red Bulls sporting director Gerard Houllier, an ex-Liverpool manager who has a friendship with Gerrard, has put Gerrard on the club's discovery list.

The inclusion on the 'discovery list' already means that should Gerrard leave Liverpool and want to play in the United States then the Red Bulls would have first call on him ahead of other American clubs.

With the arrival of New York FC to the MLS, the Red Bulls have a real fight on their hands to maintain their status within the city, let alone the league.

NYCFC have recruited heavily, with Frank Lampard and David Villa signed up as their designated players, leaving the Red Bulls to fear being overshadowed within the city.

Houllier will be hoping that his close relationship with a player that he awarded the captaincy to, back when he was just 22, would enable him to persuade the former England international to swap the Premier League for the MLS.
