Managerial Changes

Disciplinary Charges

Egypt have lodged an official complaint over their defeat to Senegal in Dakar. During the match their players were targeted with green laser pointers shone in their eye, particularly in the deciding penalty shoot-out. Egypt have also alleged their team bus was attacked on the way to the match and they were subjected to racism. An Egyptian FA statement read: "The Egyptian team was subjected to racism after the appearance of offensive banners in the stands aimed at the players, specifically Mohamed Salah. Moreover the Senegalese fans terrorised the Egyptian players by throwing bottles and stones at them during the warm-up, as well as attacking the Egyptian team bus, which caused glass shattering and some injuries, which was documented with pictures and videos attached to the complaint." Salah was targeted throughout, even having to be escorted down the tunnel after the game with security personnel protecting him from objects being thrown from above.

There was more trouble in the African section of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar as Ghana's players and staff were pelted with objects thrown from the stands as they left the pitch. Ghana reached the World Cup finals by drawing against Nigeria in Abuja and the Nigerian fans reacted badly, also pelting the 100 travelling Ghana fans with water bottles and mounting a mass pitch invasion. Police reacted with batons and tear gas, but were unable to prevent a dugout being overturned and smashed.

Newcastle United midfielder Isaac Hayden has been fined £19,000 for criticising referee David Coote on social media after Newcastle lost to Chelsea.

Leyton Orient winger Theo Archibald has been banned for 2 matches and fined £750 for using abusive and/or threatening language towards a referee. Archibald is on a season-long loan deal from Lincoln City.

Southgate Hits Out At Mob Mentality

England head coach Gareth Southgate has hit out at England fans after Manchester United captain Harry Maguire was booed before and during England's friendly win over Cote d'Ivoire at Wembley. Southgate said: "The reception was a joke, an absolute joke. I don't know how it benefits anybody. We're either all in it together or we're not. I imagine if you asked a few of them why they did it they probably wouldn't even be able to answer. It's mob mentality. One end of the ground you have a hardcore group trying to get his name sung - it wasn't everybody. Players will look at that and think, that could be me. It makes players not want to come. That happened with John Barnes here, that happened with Ashley Cole a couple of times, it happened with Raheem, now Harry. We need Harry to do well. We aren't going to win a World Cup with a load of players with three or four caps. That's never happened in the history of the game. The way he has performed for us has been absolutely phenomenal. I don't get it. He's in an England shirt and not only should you support a player in an England shirt regardless, but when you've played at the level he has for us - and put the performances in he has - it should be total commitment behind him. His performance was pretty faultless really. He stepped out from the back really well for the first goal, was involved in the second one too. The team are totally united. We recognise everyone has difficult moments, but he's a top player and he will come through it. They are real England fans and some are influenced by whatever - social media or players that played previously who are influencing opinion. The club situation is obviously very difficult, but he's in an England shirt. I remember decades ago a few players being booed in an England shirt and it's never been acceptable to me. Fans should always get behind their team."

Everton Report Big Loss

Everton's mismanagement under the ownership of Farhad Moshiri has seen them post losses of over £110m for the third season in a row! The last 3 seasons have now seen the Toffees lose £111.8m, £139.8m and £120.9m, though it is claimed £170m is due to the impact of the pandemic. The Premier League's profitability and sustainability rules only allow for combined losses of £105m over 3 seasons.

While the Toffees were making big losses, players sales helped former Premier League side Bournemouth make a profit despite relegation. The Cherries, who had lost £60m the previous year, made a pre-tax profit of £17m for the year ending June 2021 after player sales of £79.5m+. The club also cut more than £50m from their wage bill as well as claiming £2.5m from insurance following a claim for business interruption due to the pandemic. The South-Coast side sold Nathan Ake, Aaron Ramsdale and Callum Wilson during the tax year.

Championship leaders Fulham have also announced large losses, £93m in fact, for the last tax year. The losses are the largest suffered during the ownership of Shahid Khan, who bought the west London club from Mohamed Al Fayed in 2013. £51m was spent on transfer as they looked to survive in the Premier League and their wage bill was 98% of their turnover. However that season was largely impacted by the pandemic and they have spent £60m on construction projects, mainly redevelopment of the Riverside Stand at their Craven Cottage stadium. Owner Khan invested £151m during the period and has since injected another £93m into the club after this accounting period.
