Disciplinary Charges

Shakhtar Donetsk are appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in a demand for lost transfer fees from FIFA. The Ukrainian club are demanding 50m euros in damages after a FIFA ruling that allowed foreign players in Ukraine to suspend their contracts following Russia's invasion of the nation. Shakhtar Donetsk's chief executive Sergei Palkin told the BBC: "We had to do this because of Fifa's highly unfair ruling. The consequences mean we will continue to lose significant income from deals we expected to close. We would also like to highlight that given the situation Ukrainian clubs are facing with the war, there has been little respect shown towards these clubs by Fifa. Fifa has not looked to protect clubs and at no stage consulted with us to find a solution - they have seemingly ignored the perilous state that Ukrainian football clubs have been facing since the beginning of the war."

Police in Milan have apologised after Chelsea midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko, who is on loan at AC Milan, was stopped and searched at gunpoint while in his car. A video of the incident went viral this week after being shared on social media and AC Milan said of the incident: "After a shootout in the area where the midfielder happened to be, the police started making checks. The player was stopped but as soon as the police verified that he had nothing to do with what happened, they apologised and let him go." Milan police stated to Reuters: "It should be noted that the search occurred in an operational context that justified the adoption of the highest security measures. Also as a function of self-protection and was carried out in a manner absolutely consistent with the type of alarm in progress. Once the person had been identified and established that he was not involved, the service was resumed without any kind of remark from the person concerned."

Celta de Vigo striker Santi Mina has demanded that he be reinstated to their squad. The La Liga club opened disciplinary proceedings and excluded him from their squad after the 26-year-old was found guilty of sexual abuse in May. He was accused of raping a woman in a camper van in June 2017 while he was on the books of Valencia. Mina has since appealed his conviction and rejected an offer to move out on loan until the appeal is heard. Celta have stated that the club "reserves the right to claim, if the conviction is confirmed, all damages caused by the player's behaviour, both financially and in terms of the club's image, while respecting his right to appeal from today".

Heading Ban Trial

The English Football Association are to trial a ban on heading by players in under-12 level matches. Research has shown that former footballers are more likely to die from brain disease than most people and so the FA sought, and obtained, approval for the trial from the International Football Association Board (IFAB) for the start of the forthcoming season. An FA statement read: "Should the trial be a success, the aim is to then remove deliberate heading from all football matches at U12 level and below from the 2023-24 season."

Fofana Resumes International Career

The Lens midfielder voted the best African player in France's Ligue 1 last season, Seko Fofana, is coming out of his self-imposed retirement from international football. The 27-year-old took a break from playing for Cote d'Ivoire, including missing the AFCON, to "focus on his club career", but the former Manchester City man has new been persuaded by Ivory Coast's new head coach Jean-Louis Gasset to make himself available for selection once more. Fofana said: I had a good discussion with the coach and I look forward to playing for my country again. I have made it clear with all honesty that if I am called up I will make myself available to compete for a place in the squad."
