Review of the Day
Contracts
Barrow captain Niall Canavan has signed a new 2-year deal.
Fiorentina goalkeeper Pietro Terracciano has extended until 2025.
Transfers
Free agent former Tranmere Rovers full-back Calum MacDonald has signed a short-term contract with Stockport County. The 24-year-old has joined until January.
RB Leipzig have signed free agent former Aston Villa keeper Orjan Nyland.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has confirmed that Atletico Madrid will make Antoine Griezmann's loan move permanent for a fee of 20m euros plus 4m in add-ons.
Injury Round Up
Everton manager Frank Lampard has admitted they are being careful with Dominic Calvert-Lewin as they try to get their England international striker back to full fitness after an injury-hit spell that has lasted over a year: "We need to be a bit careful with him. We have to look long-term. We got him on the pitch today. It is important we do that in the right manner and get him match fit. In the Premier League, you have to be match fit. He has to get to the level where he can really affect games the way we want him to."
Barnsley have lost forward Luke Thomas for around 4 months after he suffered a double leg fracture in a freak training ground accident. The 23-year-old will require surgery.
AS Roma forward Paulo Dybala is the latest player to have picked up an injury ruling him out of the World Cup. The Argentine pulled up with a thigh injury while taking a penalty and head coach Jose Mourinho said that he would be unlikely to play again this year.
After being diagnosed with an hereditary heart condition Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Enock Mwepu has been forced to retire from playing at the age of just 24.
Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies has suffered bruising in his skull following a kick to the head from Borussia Dortmund's Jude Bellingham.
Job Changes
Laurent Blanc is back managing in French football after the former World Cup winning defender was appointed to take charge of Olympique Lyonnais. The club has put Peter Bosz on "temporary leave" after a poor start to the season, with just one point in their last 5 league matches. A club statement read: "Peter Bosz has been put on temporary leave. An internal reflection was carried out in order to find the necessary levers to allow the team to start again on a solid basis. Olympique Lyonnais have decided to appoint Laurent Blanc as head coach until 30 June, 2024."
Crawley Town have sacked manager Kevin Betsy after just 4 months in charge, with the club rooted to the bottom of the League Two table. Betsy won just one of the 12 league matches played after being appointed in June following former manager John Yems sacking over racism and discrimination allegations. Under Yems the club was alleged to be operating with a segregation policy, similar to the apartheid-era South African regime. Betsy was brought in and expected to fix all the underlying problems but was not given anywhere near enough time to do so. Assistant manager Dan Micciche has also left.
Elche will be under the temporary control of Alberto Gallego after they sacked Francisco last week. Gallego actually took a break from football during his youth for a singing career which reached its peak (or should that be trough?) when he made it to the final selection group for Spain's entry into the 2005 Eurovision Song Contest. The only thing worse than failing at the final hurdle would be actually making it to the Eurovision SOng Contest!
West Bromwich Albion have sacked head coach Steve Bruce after a terrible start to the season sees them sat in 22nd place in the Championship. His backroom staff of Steve Agnew, Stephen Clemence and Alex Bruce have also left. Richard Beale will step up from the Under-21s on an interim basis.
Disciplinary Charges
In Nigeria The Independent Corrupt Pracitces and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the African nation's anti-corruption agency, has seized property belonging to a number of former officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). The ICPC is looking into allegations that money meant for football development has disappeared and seized the properties under the belief that the value was excessive compared to the salaries the officials were receiving. Officials involved include former NFF president Amaju Pinnick and vice-president Shehu Dikko, who only left his role last month. Dikko has claimed that he owned the property before taking up his role in the NFF.
Pointless List Of The Day

PSG Owners Buy Into Portugese Club
Qatar Sports Investment, the company that owns Paris Saint-Germain, have bought 21.67% of Braga. With speculation rife that QSI might have been considering pulling out of football after the Qatari World Cup has been completed, this seems a clear sign that they intend to stay for the long term. This is the first time they have bought into another club outside of PSG, though they did hold talks about buying a percentage of Leeds United in 2019, and could signal a potential move to create a portfolio of teams similar to the City Group or the Red Bull teams. Braga are currently 3rd in the Portugese league.
