Injury Round Up

Liverpool's defeat to Arsenal on Sunday has extracted a high price from the team with a trio of players picking up injuries. Luis Diaz has been ruled out until after the World Cup with the knee injury that forced him off during the game. Both Joel Matip and Trent Alexander-Arnold also came off injured and both are expected to miss two to three weeks.

Tottenham Hotspur loanee Troy Parrott has been ruled out until after the World Cup with a knee injury. The 20-year-old is on loan with Preston North End for the season.

Job Changes

West Bromwich Albion have sacked Steve Bruce after 8 months in charge. Bruce leaves with the Baggies 22nd in the Championship.

James Rowberry has been sacked by Newport County with them 18th in League Two following 8 defeats in 13 games. His assistant Carl Serrant has also left leaving sporting director Darren Kelly in temporary charge.

Manchester City's City Football Group Head of Human Performance, Sam Erith is leaving the role to join the Madison Square Garden Sports Corporation during the World Cup break. Erith, who City brought in from Spurs, originally joined Man City as Head of Sports Science, was replaced in August by Dan Lewindon, who joined from the Lawn Tennis Association as Director of Player Health and Performance. MSG own National Basketball Association (NBA) team New York Knicks and National Hockey Association (NHL) side New York Rangers.

Andrew Meredith has left Manchester United. Aussie Meredith was United's Analysis Operations manager since September 2019 with his responsibilities on strategy not matchday duties.

VfB Stuttgart have sacked their American head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo after the weekend's defeat to Union Berlin. Stuttgart recently brought in Sami Khedira as a consultant due to the team's struggles to get results despite performances being much better than those results would suggest. In fact, they are now the only team in the Bundesliga without a win this season and sit 17th with 5 points and only avoided relegation last season on the final day.

In Major League Soccer, Columbus Crew have relieved their head coach Caleb Porter of his duties after they failed to make the play-offs for the second successive season.

Disciplinary Charges

Watford midfielder Imran Louza has been charged with spitting at an opponent during their 2-1 defeat at the hands of Swansea City. If found guilty, Louza will face a 6-game ban.

Celtic have picked up a couple of fines from UEFA. They were fined over £13,000 for an offensive anti-monarchy banner they displayed during the Champions League match against Shakhtar Donetsk in Warsaw six days after the death of Queen Elizabeth II. They were also fined £3,000 for pyrotechnics used before the home game against Real Madrid in the same competition.

Fellow SPFL side Rangers have also been fined almost £13,000 by UEFA for picking up 6 bookings in game against Napoli in the Champions League.

The Europa Conference League saw a third SPFL side fined, this time Heart of Midlothian £2600 for pyrotechnics during the home game versus Istanbul Baseksehir. Hearts were also fined over £2,000 for objects thrown onto the pitch by their fans during the game against Latvian side RFS.

RFS themselves picked up a £3,5000 fine for improper conduct in the game against Hearts.

The president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) Luis Rubiales has been under pressure for a long period, but the pressure is growing now due to the leak of messages from his phone. Business deals with Barcelona defender Gerard Pique have put him under scrutiny, along with his decision to keep Jorge Vilda in charge of the Spanish women's team despite the walkout of 15 players. There have also been accusations of company-funded orgies levelled at Rubiales. The latest leaks from his phone have been messages to his father insulting three La Liga clubs, Sevilla, Villareal and Valencia, which he referred to as his least favourite clubs, leading to the trio to put out the following joint statement: "Valencia, Sevilla and Villarreal together condemn the serious disrespect from Luis Rubiales, President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, revealed on Tuesday the 11th of October by El Confidencial. The conversations in which he speaks with such offence, ill will and arrogance towards the three clubs are unacceptable coming from a person that holds a position of such responsibility and should treat the interests of all clubs in Spanish football equally. Valencia, Sevilla, Villarreal condemn the slights and the lack of respect of Luis Rubiales towards our entities and, most importantly, towards the feeling of their fans. In that sense, we express our maximum concern for the possible consequences that his attitude may bring for out clubs, given that his behaviour does not foment the transparency of the competition. Valencia, Sevilla and Villarreal encourage Luis Rubiales to rectify and ask for forgiveness publicly from the three institutions and their fans." So far, instead of any signs of forgiveness there have been further leaks and he has now managed to upset a fourth club, Atletico Madrid, after he referred to them as 'patetico' (pathetic).

Bodycam Trial

The English Football Association is to begin a trial in grassroots football in an attempt to prevent abuse of officials. Referees will wear body cameras during matches as they seek to reduce threatening behaviour and violent incidents. Last season saw 380 bans handed to players and coaches for threatening referees and match officials in English football. An FA spokesperson said: "The aim of the trial, the first globally of this nature, would be to explore whether the use of bodycams improves participant behaviour, while providing additional safety for match officials in the adult grassroots game. We will be tracking the impact of the trial on behaviour and, if it's successful, will look to roll it out nationally and internationally. We are finalising the details of the trial with Ifab and further information will be communicated in due course."
