Football News: Russell Martin Underestimates The Rangers Manager Job
Would prefer my first post to be on something more positive but it is what it is! Delighted the takeover went through and there is still great reason to be positive with the guys in charge and long term outlook for our club. I also think we've signed a couple of good players and finally we're getting some dross off the books.
The issue is - as it is with many people who come into our club - is that they completely underestimate just how difficult a job it is and what narrow but distinct qualities they need to succeed.
Everyone knows this group has thrown every manager since Gerrard under the bus. Gio, Beale, Clement and wee Barry all thought they could get a different tune out of the same players that shafted the previous manager. A clear out has been needed for years.
My issue is that Russell Martin (RM) has reached for some pretty desperate cover stories so early to cover his own arse. Releasing that info out repeatedly in interviews was unnecessary yesterday and leaves him with nowhere to go, and probably makes whatever relationship he has with the rest of the players even worse.
It doesn't do any favours when you're trying to hold out for a price when you're effectively telling everyone you've got a problem on your hands that needs shifted. It's awful business and amateur management.
Being from the original Walter period, you settle your back five and build from that. It gives the rest of the team confidence that they can play on that solidity. We could not be further from that; 3 of the 5 are loan players and one OOC this season.
Every one of the players looks worse by the game and whether that's because they're being given too much information / coaching, they just don't believe what they are being told to do or a combination of both. RM looks dead in the water already. Some of these guys know they can shift a manager on and it looks like he's in a race against time to rid the squad of everyone he suspects.
Question is, should he be the guy to do that? Are we not just getting rid of Beale and Koppens' history and replacing them with Martin and Thelwell's?
He's taken a midfield that was really strong looking and decimated it in a few games. The defence has looked worse season by season since Gerrard. I don't buy into there's no change without pain. It's a kop out statement that sends a message to everyone we're here for the taking. Teams up here smell it off you and are too well drilled and physical to let that go.
RM leaves nobody up front during set pieces and everyone is feasting on us when they get a chance to put a ball into the box. Man, I could go on all day but I'll go get breakfast first.
