Rangers Fans Demand Answers After Another Mess
Rangers supporters are questioning whether the takeover has delivered progress, with frustration spilling over after Hibs. The spotlight is now firmly on recruitment, leadership decisions and Derek McIness' team selection.
I really don't know where to start with what I witnessed yesterday in the Rangers v Hibs match, so I'm going to discuss our new owners.
Regression since the takeover
Since the takeover, Glasgow Rangers have seriously regressed as a club and footballing team. How's that possible? How can we find ourselves in a worse position on the field than we were before the takeover? How can our football squad be worse off than it was 18 months back when we have spent the best part of 50m on it?
How can a team, who have spent more than its rivals, end a season in 3rd place, and without any silverware, in such a backwater league as the SPL?
Leadership and recruitment failures
I sat yesterday watching supporters around me arguing, and at one point, nearly get physical, as our season starts to unravel after only 2 games. And all the while this is happening, our illustrious leader was sat in the directors box watching it first hand. Andrew, do you see the complete mess you are in charge of?
Does being a successful businessman mean you will be a successful football club owner? Clearly not. Since this man, who we knew nothing about, and who has absolutely zero connection with our club came in, it's been one mess after another.
In 18 months we have had 2 x failures in the manager/coach role. 1 x failure in CEO role. 1 x failure in Sporting Director role. Failure to sack the son of said Sporting Director. Failures all over our recruitment team. Overpaying on loan fees on players who were abject failures.
Finishing 3rd in a league where we should never finish 3rd. Disastrous European campaigns. The list appears endless, and with no indication of ending.
For something that promised so much, and which gave us supporters belief again, this takeover, so far, has been a complete anticlimax. The money we have wasted is criminal. The hole we find ourselves in continues to get deeper, and if something doesn't change soon, we are going to find ourselves buried right up to our necks in it.
This man, who we all heralded as our saviour, needs to act soon and sort this, or goodness knows where we will end up at the end of it.
McIness under pressure already
As much as I believe the mess we find ourselves in is down to how we are run, we can't just ignore what's happening on the field. I was all for giving Derek McIness a chance, but what is he playing at? What was that starting 11 all about? What were his subs all about? Does he actually know what he's doing? Is the Rangers job just too big for him?
I posted yesterday that these next 3 games were massive for McIness, and could be the making, or breaking, of the man. Well, that wasn't a great start, was it? A CM at right back? A forward creative player at right back, when he subbed our new 5m CM he put at right back?
Taking off our most creative player? Taking off Findlay Curtis, and replacing him with McCrorie? These bizarre subs have been happening in all his competitive games so far. Does he know what he's doing? Is he throwing as much of the brown stuff at the wall to see what sticks?
Look, I really want McIness to succeed, as I like the guy. Obviously it doesn't help when we were wrongly penalised. How was that ever a penalty? Even so, we had plenty of time to right that wrong, but we are so dire in front of goal, and in defence, we just don't have it in us.
Europe next and the need to stop the rot
On to Europe next, where only a victory is acceptable. We, as a club, all need this. This is not even up for debate. If we fail to qualify, then fail to beat St Mirren, then McIness may as well start thinking about his next job.
It sounds crazy, but we all know it will happen.
