Chelsea youngster Tomas Kalas has joined Middlesbrough on loan for the rest of the season.

Jose Mourinho's former assistant at Real Madrid, Boro's manager Aitor Karanka confirmed the deal was done.

The 21 year old Czech Republic international centre back had been wanted by QPR, but decided to drop down into the Championship instead to work with Karanka.

He had spent the beginning of the season on loan at FC Koln, but returned to Chelsea without making a single Bundesliga appearance.

It is likely that he will slot into the right back berth for Boro, as first choice right back Emilio Nsue is away with Equatorial Guinea, captaining them in their assault on the African Cup of Nations.

Kalas made his debut for Chelsea last season in the match against Liverpool, which is mostly remember for Steven Gerrard's slip, but he was part of a defence that shut out the feared pairing of Suarez and Sturridge.
