Injury Round-Up

Senegal have been heavily criticised after allowing Liverpool forward Sadio Mane to continue playing despite clearly being heavily concussed following a sickening clash of head with Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha. Mane played on for several minutes, scoring the winner, after having to be helped from the pitch looking extremely groggy. The organisers of the AFCON, Confederation of African Football, have shirked all responsibility and laid the blame firmly at the door of Senegal's team doctors. Mane was only substituted off after he lay down on the halfway line, even though he had lost consciousness in the original clash, which saw Vozinha red carded.

Ansu Fati, the former Barcelona wunderkind, has decided not to have surgery to correct his hamstring injury. The 19-year-old needed 4 surgeries on a knee problem and this time has decided to try to recover without resorting to the knife.

Chanka Simba, who is currently on loan at Northampton Town from Cardiff City, is out for 6 weeks with a hamstring injury.

James Perch has been given the all-clear to return to full training with Mansfield Town following a fractured skull the veteran former Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United defender suffered in August.

Managerial Changes

Ghana have sacked head coach Milovan Rajevac after their early exit from the African Cup of Nations. The Black Stars were one of the favourites for the trophy but failed to make it out of the group stages suffering a shock defeat at the hands of debutants Comoros.

Disciplinary Charges

Markus Anfang, the former Werder Bremen head coach, has been banned from football for a year and fined 20,000euro for using a fake vaccination certificate. His former assistant there Florian Junge was banned for 10 months and fined 3,000euro for the same offence. Both men initially denied the charges, but then immediately quit Werder. They since confessed to obtaining fake vaccination cards during the summer to avoid having to be regularly tested.

Derby County's administrators have been given until the beginning of March to prove the funding is in place for the club to complete the season.

The 22-year-old, who has been unable to play for Rangers due to a heart defect being found in a medical, posted screenshots on his social media of the abuse he suffered in the chat while on Twitch.

Hull City's transfer embargo has been lifted after the club's new owners paid back a loan from the English Football League.

Pandemic Problems

The English Premier League have amended their rules to require teams to prove that they have at least four positive tests in order to request a postponement. The rule came about after heavy criticism due to 22 top-flight games being postponed in December and January alone. Some clubs were citing AFCON call-ups and injuries, with Arsenal requesting, and getting, the North London derby called off with just one positive case.

Infantino Blunder

Sepp Blatter's protege Gianni Infantino is being heavily criticised after the FIFA president claimed that holding a World Cup every 2 years was not about making money for FIFA but to save the lives of potential African refugees. Infantino said: "We need to give opportunities and we need to give dignity. Not by giving charity, but by allowing the rest of the world to participate. We need to give hope to Africans so they don't need to cross the Mediterranean in order to find, maybe, a better life, but more probably death in the sea." Kick It Out chief executive Tony Burnett responded by stating: "Fifa is a multi-billion profit-making organisation. They already have the funds to invest in creating and inspiring opportunity for disadvantaged people around the world. It is therefore completely unacceptable to suggest that a biennial World Cup, predominantly set up to drive further profits for Fifa, could be a solution for migrants who risk their lives, sometimes fleeing war-torn countries, to seek a better life." FIFA's delegates were told that switching to a two-year cycle for the World Cup would raise £3.3bn in extra revenue for FIFA.
