Injury Round-Up

The PFA have hit out at the concussion protocols after Leeds United's Robin Koch suffered a head injury against Manchester United. Koch clashed heads with Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay but was allowed to play on by medical staff before having to be replaced later because he was concussed. The PFA stated: "Put simply, the current rules set by Ifab [International Football Association Board] are not working, and players are being put at risk." The PFA are requesting the introduction of temporary substitutes to allow players to be assessed for concussion. Leeds also backed the call for temporary subs, adding that their medical staff: have always been in favour of temporary substitutions for head injuries. Leeds United can confirm that following a clash of heads, Robin Koch passed all of the on-field concussion screening tests that are currently part of the Premier League protocols. The player was told if he developed any symptoms he should sit down on the field of play and would be substituted immediately, which is what Robin did in the 29th minute of the game."

Ajax have agreed to pay around £6.5m in compensation to the family of their former player Abdelhak Nouri after "inadequate" medical treatment left the then 20-year-old with serious permanent brain damage. During a friendly against Werder Bremen in JUly 2017, Nouri suffered a cardiac arrest and an investigation found that medics spent too long trying to clear his airways and failed to use a defibrillator until too late. Ajax have been been paying for his care ever since and say they will continue to do so.

Sheffield United pair Jayden Bogle and David McGoldrick have both been ruled out for the rest of the season due to injury. Bogle is out for 6 months after knee surgery, while McGoldrick requires an operation on a thigh injury.

Managerial Changes

Reading have sacked their manager Veljko Paunovic despite finally getting a win, their first in 13 games. The Serbian managed just 2 wins in his last 15 matches in charge of the Royals, though he was hampered this season by numerous injuries, a transfer embargo and a points deduction due to financial issues. Paul Ince, whose son Tom signed for them in the January window, has been appointed in caretaker charge, despite not working as a manager since 2014.

Birmingham City have appointed Ian Dutton as their new managing director. A Birmingham fan, Dutton has been working as part of the club's commercial team since 2007.

Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson has submitted his resignation which the club have accepted.

Newport County assistant manager Wayne Hatswell has quit "to pursue a new opportunity". He is expected to follow his former manager Michael Flynn to Walsall.

Disciplinary Charges

The Football Association is investigating after Manchester United winger Anthony Elanga was hit by an object thrown by the crowd at Elland Road after Fred scored in a 4-2 win over Leeds United. West Yorkshire Police made a total of 9 arrests during the game, for offences including the throwing of missiles. Leeds have said they are searching the CCTV footage and will ban for life any supporter found to have thrown objects towards the pitch.

Tuchel Backs Lukaku

After misfiring former Manchester United and Everton striker Romelu Lukaku set a record low point for least amount of touches in a 90-minute appearance in the Premier League, with just 7, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has backed his hugely expensive flop signing. Tuchel said: "He's in the spotlight and we'll protect him. Romelu will always be part of the solution. Sometimes it's like this with strikers if they struggle a little bit with self-confidence and to find the space to get involved with a good defensive side. Of course it's not what we want and what Romelu wants but it's also not the time to laugh about him and make jokes about him."
