Football News: Strange Choice For Forest

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the founding of Nottingham Forest, a club with a history that includes 2 European Cups. So why have they chosen to face Aston Villa as a celebration of their founding?

Surely Malmo or Hamburg, the teams they beat in the final, would have been more appropriate and, without trying to offend Villa fans, more exciting? They have faced the Claret and Blues half of Birmingham many times, it is hardly something out of the ordinary.

It is hard to believe that either Malmo or Hamburg would consider themselves too big to face an English Championship team in preseason. In fact it is the pinnacle of Malmo FF's achievements in Europe reaching the 1979 final to face Forest.

Forest's owner makes many claims about having the club at heart, but in this instance it feels like he has failed to understand the history and culture of the club. 150 years of history deserves a truly special event to commemorate it, a moment of real significance in that history being relived for the fans to enjoy a spot of nostalgia.

Sadly the club have missed the target here, with an event that is neither truly special, nor likely to evoke the spirit of nostalgia that an event to mark the team's history should have. This was a chance to remind the fans why Nottingham Forest is special at a time when so many are being bombarded by Premier League hype. Sadly, the chance was not taken.
